Study attributes significant amount of kidney disease globally to PM2.5 pollution

The global toll of chronic kidney disease (CKD) attributable to PM 2.5 pollution is significant, according to an analysis presented at ASN (American Society of Nephrology) Kidney Week. GM successfully demonstrated its Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) capability on public roads outside Jiading Auto Innovation Park in Shanghai. Conducted in collaboration with Shanghai International Auto City and Shanghai Song Hong Intelligent Automotive Technology Co. the demonstration featured testing vehicles that can receive real-time data from traffic lights on signal phasing and timing.

UMTRI: average US new vehicle fuel economy drops in October

The average fuel economy (window-sticker value) of new vehicles sold in the US in October was 25.2 mpg (9.33 l/100 km), down 0.1 mpg from September, according to the monthly report from Dr. Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). The value for October is up 5.1 mpg since October 2007 (the first month of their monitoring), but down 0.3 mpg from the peak of 25.5 mpg reached in August 2014.

Tsinghua study finds China’s actions have cut PM2.5 concentrations 21.5% from 2013-2015; PM2.5-related mortality down 9.1%

Air pollution in China, especially in mega-metropolitan areas, is a matter of concern due to its impact on public health; outdoor PM 2.5 exposure contributed to approximately 1.22 million deaths in China in 2013. China’s measures to improve its air quality are working, but more stringent policies should be put in place to safeguard public health, according to a new open-access study by researchers at Tsinghua University published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.

UPS, NYSERDA project to convert UPS diesel delivery trucks to electric; UES 225 kW switched reluctance motor

Audi steps up research into carbon-neutral synthetic fuels with new e-diesel pilot plant; power-to-liquids

First driving behavior-based telematics automobile insurance developed for Toyota connected cars in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation and the MS&AD Insurance Group’s Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co., have jointly developed Japan’s first driving behavior-based telematics automobile insurance. The plan is available to owners of certain units of Toyota connected cars, and uses driving data gathered via telematics technologies to adjust insurance premiums based on the level of safe driving every month. Total insurance premiums comprise a combination of basic insurance premiums and usage-based insurance.

ICCT analysis finds real-world vehicle fuel consumption gap in Europe at all-time high of 42%

Braskem, Haldor Topsoe to partner to produce MEG from sugar

Battery-electric Mercedes-Benz Citaro city bus to debut in 2018 at IAA

Aalto University team finds beryllium doping can benefit gallium nitride power electronics

Physicists at Aalto University in Finland, with colleagues in Texas and Poland, have shown that beryllium doping can prove beneficial in gallium nitride (GaN) power electronics. The team made a breakthrough in revising methods largely discarded 15 years ago. A paper on their work is published in the journal Physical Review Letters. There is growing demand for semiconducting gallium nitride in the power electronics industry.

Sumitomo Electric and DOCOMO testing 5G real-time traffic monitoring

Ford pilots Ekso exoskeleton technology to help lessen chance of worker fatigue, injury

Ford is working with California-based Ekso Bionics to test the use of exoskeleton technology for Ford assembly workers. Some Ford assembly line workers lift their arms during overhead work tasks some 4,600 times per day, or about 1 million times per year. At this rate, the possibility of fatigue or injury on the body increases significantly. The new upper body exoskeletal tool is designed to help to lessen the chance of injury under these conditions.

Study concludes 20% synthetic diesel blend could reduce PM emissions in Beijing by ~19%

PM emissions from current vehicles in Beijing could be reduced by approximately 19% by simply blending 20% synthetic diesel with currently available diesel, according to a new study by Tsinghua University, the Desert Research Institute in Nevada and Greyrock Energy, a developer of gas-to-liquids technology. KLM and Costa Rica partner on aviation biofuels

The Costa Rican government and KLM will research the possibilities of flying from San José, the capital of Costa Rica, using bio-based jet fuel. On 31 October, KLM and the Costa Rican government signed a letter of intent to ratify the cooperation, marking the first such agreement of this kind between an airline and a country. In the months to come, KLM will share its knowledge and expertise with the Costa Rican government in close cooperation with its partner SkyNRG.

EC proposes 30% CO2 reduction from 2021 to 2030 for light-duty vehicles

As part of a newly released Clean Mobility package, the European Commission is proposing a 30% reduction in average CO 2 emissions for new cars and vans from 2021 to 2030. The proposal includes targets both for 2025 and 2030. The 2025 intermediary target of a 15% reduction is intended to kick-start investments immediately. The 2030 target gives stability and long-term direction to keep up these investments.
