Fisker files patents on solid-state battery technology; anticipating automotive-ready from 2023

Fisker’s scientists, including a co-founder of solid-state battery start-up Sakti3 (acquired by Dyson, earlier post ), filed patents this week (under a non-publication request) on flexible, superior energy density solid-state batteries. The patent includes claims over novel materials and manufacturing processes that are critical in achieving the required energy density, power and cost targets required for the widespread use of electric vehicles.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Terrafugia, a US-based company developing practical flying cars.Terrafugia was founded in 2006 by five MIT graduates; since then, the company has delivered a number of working prototypes. CMB launching dual-fuel hydrogen-diesel ship

Maritime Belge SA (CMB) is launching the Hydroville —the first passenger shuttle that has received a Class approval to burn diesel and hydrogen in its combustion engines. The vessel completed her sea trials on 16 November. The shuttle will be mainly used as a platform to test hydrogen technology for commercial sea-going vessels. In a first phase, the Hydroville will transport people from Kruibeke to Antwerp during the rush hour.

13 environmental groups urge USPS to select plug-ins for next-generation delivery vehicles

Toyota to build first MW-scale 100% renewable power and hydrogen generation station

Bosch subsidiary Buderus Guss introduces brake disc that generates up to 90% less brake dust

According to the Baden-Württemberg state environmental agency, brakes and tires are responsible for 32% of driving-related particulate emissions—roughly half of which is brake dust. Significantly reducing brake dust is therefore essential to improving the air, especially in cities. JBM Auto to launch 9-, 12-meter electric buses at Auto Expo 2018 in India

UK launching £400M vehicle charging infrastructure fund; putting extra £100M to support for buying EVs

The UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, presented his Autumn Budget to Parliament. API: US petroleum demand last month highest for October since 2007; 19.9 mbpd

Total petroleum deliveries in October moved up by 1.1% from October 2016 to average 19.9 million barrels per day, according to data from the American Petroleum Institute (API). These were the highest October deliveries since 2007. Compared with September, total domestic petroleum deliveries, a measure of US petroleum demand, decreased 1.8%. The team’s recent findings are described in an open access paper in the journal Scientific Reports. UMTRI: average US new vehicle fuel economy drops in October

The average fuel economy (window-sticker value) of new vehicles sold in the US in October was 25.2 mpg (9.33 l/100 km), down 0.1 mpg from September, according to the monthly report from Dr. Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). The value for October is up 5.1 mpg since October 2007 (the first month of their monitoring), but down 0.3 mpg from the peak of 25.5 mpg reached in August 2014.

Optimized BMW eDrive technology delivers more power—total output increased to 369 hp (+12 hp)—and a refined high-voltage battery with increased capacity and range.
