Developing technology to address the causes of climate change, mitigate its impact, and adapt to the crisis is one of IEEE’s top priorities. To assist with that effort, the IEEE Young Professionals group this year launched its Climate and Sustainability Task Force. On 12 September, CSTF and IRENA presented a Youth Day event.

Mining giant Rio Tinto will invest around $1 billion over the next five years to support the delivery of its new climate change targets and a company objective for net zero emissions from operations by 2050. The production of aluminium, copper and high-grade iron ore will play a part in the transition to a low carbon economy.

A three-year study by a team of researchers based at MIT has concluded that fundamental changes are needed in the US energy-innovation system. For each year of delay it will be necessary to “bend the curve” of carbon emissions that much more sharply if the worst consequences of climate change are to be averted.

A team of 26 climate scientists from Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States have published the “Copenhagen Diagnosis”, an interim synthesis report on developments in climate change science from mid-2006 to the present day.

Widespread climate-related impacts are occurring now in the US and are expected to increase.
