ZF has developed an electric motor which does not require magnets. In contrast to the magnet-free concepts of separately excited synchronous motors (SESM) already available today, ZF’s I 2 SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Motor) transmits the energy for the magnetic field via an inductive exciter inside the rotor shaft. This makes the motor uniquely compact with maximum power and torque density.
MINI will present two members of the new electric MINI family at IAA: the fifth generation MINI Cooper and the new MINI Countryman. In a new report , Deloitte forecasts that the clean hydrogen market will top the value of the liquid natural gas trade by 2030 and grow further to US$1.4 trillion per year by 2050. A study led by Norwegian climate center CICERO has found that the global warming effect of leaked hydrogen is almost 12 times stronger than that of CO 2. The open-access paper is published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment. Unlike exhaust from burning coal and gas that contains CO 2 , burning hydrogen emits only water vapor and oxygen. Rather, it is the leaking of hydrogen from production, transportation and usage that adds to global warming.
A team of MIT engineers is developing a 1MW motor that could be a key stepping stone toward electrifying larger aircraft. Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a coating composed of carbon nanotubes that imparts superlubricity to sliding parts. It reduces the friction of steel rubbing on steel at least a hundredfold. A paper on the coating is published in the journal Materials Today Nano. Superlubricity is the property of showing virtually no resistance to sliding; its hallmark is a coefficient of friction less than 0.01.
The Yongsoo wave energy power plant, installed at berth 1 in the Korean Institute KRISO -Wave Energy Test Site (WETS), is preparing to produce green hydrogen from next year, according to a report from Ocean Energy Systems. China-based Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) reported successful testing of non-desalinated seawater electrolysis technology for hydrogen production powered by offshore wind. Researchers from Tokyo Tech have developed a tin-based metal–organic framework (MOF) that can photocatalytically reduce carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into formate under visible light. The tin-based MOF exhibited a high apparent quantum yield of 9.8% and carried out extremely selective photoreduction without needing an additional photosensitizer. This could prove extremely useful, as currently, most metal complexes for reducing CO 2 to useful chemicals utilize expensive, rare and precious metals.
Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. An economic study by research group Steer, and commissioned by T&E, looked at future operating costs of hydrogen planes on intra-European flights and found that they could be an efficient, cost competitive technology to decarbonize the sector, provided kerosene is taxed adequately. SUE Mosgortrans has started testing GAZelle e-City electric minibuses, produced by Russia’s GAZ. (The e-City is based on GAZ’s diesel-powered City minibus.) Lightning eMotors signed a contract with Macnab EV Sales Corp. to deliver 126 vehicles to the Canadian commercial vehicle distributor by the end of 2023. Deliveries of Lightning’s ZEV3 vans to Macnab have already begun. The full order of 126 vehicles includes ZEV3 cargo and passenger van configurations and ZEV4 shuttle buses. Bremer Strassenbahn AG (BSAG) has ordered 35 all-electric eCitaro G low-floor articulated buses from Mercedes-Benz with the latest NMC 3 (NMC: lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide) battery technology.
