The idea of applying the Mustang’s pony car heritage to Ford’s first widely available electric vehicle, the Mach-E, might seem like sacrilege to some, or the smartest product decision of the decade to others. Whether you come out on either side of that, or somewhere in the middle like us, the Mustang Mach-E takes electric cars.
A multi-institutional research team led by materials scientists from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has designed a highly active and durable catalyst that doesn’t rely on costly platinum group metals (PGM) to spur the necessary chemical reaction. The new catalyst contains cobalt interspersed with nitrogen and carbon. When compared to a similarly structured catalyst made from iron—another promising, well-studied platinum substitute—the team found that the cobalt catalyst
On 4 December 2020, the LME cash price hit its highest level since March 2013, closing at US$7,742/t. (By 10 December, that dropped back to $7,712/t.) Copper has charted an unlikely trajectory through 2020, notes Roskill. Copper prices plunged 27% to a low of US$4,617/t in late March as the global impact of COVID-19 became apparent, but copper stabilized and then began to rise, completing a full recovery to its January starting point by the end of July.

Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy will work with Idaho National Laboratory to demonstrate a system that uses a nuclear plant’s steam and electricity to split water. ( Earlier post.) The resulting hydrogen will initially be used at the power plant, but it could eventually be sold to other industries. The new project is the first to pair a commercial electricity generator with high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) technology.
The EU plans to extend its climate goal of reducing CO 2 emission of new vehicles by 37.5% until 2030 to heavy-duty vehicles. In 2019, 409,801 commercial vehicles were registered in Germany, of these, 38,620 semitrailer trucks. So far, they have not been subject to any CO 2 reduction requirements. Within the KliMEA project, researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) will study drive systems of heavy duty vehicles and fuel cell technology to find ways how future production of fuel cel
