SSAB produces first fossil-free steel and delivers it to Volvo Group; HYBRIT technology

The hydrogen gas used in the direct reduction process is produced by electrolysis of water with fossil-free electricity, and can be used directly or stored for later use. We’ll be converting to electric arc furnace in Oxelösund as early as 2025. The steel is now being delivered to the first customer, the Volvo Group.

HYBRIT produces hydrogen-reduced sponge iron on pilot scale

The pilot plant has a direct reduction shaft, where the reduction takes place, and a number of electrolyzers for the production of hydrogen using fossil-free electricity. This marks the first time that iron ore has been directly reduced with hydrogen produced with fossil-free electricity on a pilot scale.

PowerCell and partners begin power-to-gas pilot study; hydrogen from excess renewable electricity

The study is intended to lead to a joint demonstration project in 2016 next to PowerCell’s premises in Gothenburg, Sweden. Hydrogen is produced via electrolysis using the excess renewable electricity; the hydrogen can then be used in a fuel cell to generate new electricity and heat when needed.
