The average annual price of gasoline has fluctuated greatly over the past several decades, but when adjusted for inflation (constant dollars), the price of gasoline in 2019 was only nine cents higher than in 1929, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE). The graph below shows the effect of the oil embargo in the early 1980s.
This analysis examines the effect of this downturn in driving on gasoline consumption (both total and per capita), and places the consumption in 2020 in a historical context. The results show that gasoline consumption per capita in 2020 was on par with that 55 years ago. Total consumption. Total consumption (millions of gallons).

This early work established that gasoline-like fuels with high resistance to autoignition are preferred for PPCI. Combustion stability.
NREL also found that these early fuel cell vehicles achieved more than twice the efficiency of today’s gasoline vehicles. In 2009, NREL expanded this CDP to include a comparison of the efficiency at full power, for which DOE’s target was 50% net system efficiency. Therefore, DOE’s 2,000-hour target for durability has been validated.
