Study finds air pollution and GHG costs of crude-by-rail nearly 2x pipeline costs; much larger than spill and accidents costs

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have found that the air pollution and greenhouse gas costs of shipping crude by rail are nearly twice as large as those for oil pipelines. Further, their estimates of air pollution and greenhouse gas costs are much larger than estimates of spill and accidents costs—more than twice as big for rail and more than eight times as big for pipelines.

Seven Western states sign deal to expand electric-car charging networks

The Western United States will soon see an electric-car charging network covering 5,000 miles of roadways. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper announced that he and six other governors in western states have agreed to develop a network of fast-charge stations in the region. As part of its bid to go green, America's second-largest bus system has placed an order for up to 100 New Flyer Xcelsior Charge all-electric buses. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) has ordered 35 buses and has the option to purchase an additional 65. AKASOL to showcase high-performance battery systems for e-buses at Busworld Europe; expanding production

At Busworld Europe in Belgium later this month, AKASOL will present its AKASYSTEM OEM battery system as a complete roof installation including the chiller and other additional components. The advanced Brose electric motor can be activated as required to supplement the rider’s pedal power, with output of 250 W and 90 N·m (66 lb-ft) of torque. DOE-supported CO2-capture project hits major milestone: 4 million metric tons

A large-scale CO 2 capture technology made possible through support from the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and National Energy Technology Laboratory has captured and transported its 4-millionth metric ton of CO 2. Stanford team develops sodium-ion battery with performance equivalent to Li-ion, but at much lower cost

Stanford researchers have developed a sodium-ion battery (SIB) that can store the same amount of energy as a state-of-the-art lithium ion, at substantially lower cost. As reported in a paper in Nature Energy , the Stanford team achieved four-sodium storage in a Na 2 C 6 O 6 electrode with a reversible capacity of 484 mAh g −1 , an energy density of 726 Wh kg −1 cathode , an energy efficiency above 87% and a good cycle retention.
