Rhodium Group estimates US GHG fell 2.1% in 2019, driven by coal decline

Green Car Congress

This decline was due almost entirely to a drop in coal consumption. Coal-fired power generation fell by a record 18% year-on-year to its lowest level since 1975. An increase in natural gas generation offset some of the climate gains from this coal decline, but overall power sector emissions still decreased by almost 10%.

Ninth annual Green Innovation Index finds California light-duty vehicle emissions spike; major challenge to 2030 climate goals

Green Car Congress

However, although the state has made considerable progress decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the rate of emissions decline appears to be slowing, due in part to a spike in transportation emissions attributed to an increase from light-duty vehicles. But the effects of these efforts seem to be reaching a plateau.

ANL: life-cycle water consumption of fuel cell vehicles can be cut in half compared to that of conventional ICE vehicles

Green Car Congress

If the hydrogen is produced from solar power and water, the life-cycle water consumption is almost 60% less. grid electricity and FCEVs with biomass or coal gasification have life-cycle water consumption comparable to baseline gasoline E10 ICEV. —“Water Consumption for Light-Duty Vehicles’ Transportation Fuels”.

Study finds shifts to renewable energy can drive up energy poverty

Green Car Congress

Efforts to shift away from fossil fuels and replace oil and coal with renewable energy sources can help reduce carbon emissions but do so at the expense of increased inequality, according to a new study by researchers at Portland State University (PSU) and Vanderbilt University. —Julius McGee. —Julius McGee. 2019.05.024.

The emission reduction potential is most significant for light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles, with other contributions coming from shipping, aviation and biofuels. GtCO 2 /year (light duty vehicles) by 2030. This has raised hopes that emissions have peaked, as they must by 2020 to remain on a successful climate trajectory.
