Review of co-processing of biocrudes in oil refineries

Green Car Congress

Liquid intermediates from pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) can be co-processed in an oil refinery along with conventional crude oil. After pyrolysis, the vapors are condensed to give a dark brown fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO). In fast pyrolysis, biomass is quickly heated to around 500 °C in the absence of oxygen.

Oleophobic hydrophobic magnetic sponge selectively soaks up oil, sparing water and wildlife

Green Car Congress

A Northwestern Engineering-led team has developed a highly porous smart sponge that selectively soaks up oil in water. With an ability to absorb more than 30 times its weight in oil, the sponge could be used to clean up oil spills inexpensively and efficiently without harming marine life.

KAUST team develops process for tunable membranes for energy-efficient crude oil fractionation

Green Car Congress

The membranes, with their ultrathin tunable selective layers, offer an innovative membrane development solution for energy-efficient crude oil fractionation. The membranes are also advantageous for their low-carbon footprint properties and suitability to promote the circular carbon economy (CCE).

SLB introduces low-carbon alternative for well construction cement that eliminates up to 85% of embodied CO2

Green Car Congress

The cement-free EcoShield system is a breakthrough that delivers industry-standard zonal isolation capabilities while significantly minimizing impact from upstream oil and gas production. This barrier also protects fresh water aquifers and helps prevent the inflow of undesirable hydrocarbons.

Polymer-based membranes offer alternative to thermal processes for separating hydrocarbon and crude oil mixtures

Green Car Congress

Their stability and selectivity can be tuned by thermal crosslinking to separate simple hydrocarbon mixtures and complex crude oil fractions. The polytriazole membrane can enrich up to 80 to 95% of the hydrocarbon content with less than 10 carbon atoms (140 gram mole ?1 A paper on the work is published in Science. —Chisca et al.

Novel microbial biosensor platforms for early detection and treatment of oil leakage and produced waters

Green Car Congress

Plus if we are able to develop this system on a larger scale, the same unit would be able to treat the waste and to remediate the soil and water that has been contaminated. One type of bacteria he is testing is referred to as “electrogenic,” which means that it releases electrons to its environment through metabolic processes.
