South African engineering company Swayana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LanzaTech to collaborate on developing projects for the production of ethanol and higher value products from waste gases in the ferroalloy and titania smelting sectors. In all cases, however, the production of ferroalloys is energy-intensive.

A team at the University of Leeds (UK) is investigating hydrogen production from waste tires using a two-stage pyrolysis-gasification reactor and Ni-Mg-Al (1:1:1) catalyst. The generation rate of waste tires is increasing, especially with the continued increase in production of cars and trucks, the authors note.

Ford Motor Company’s Oakville Assembly plant in Canada now sends no operational waste-to-landfill, an achievement that gives Ford Motor Company the distinction of becoming landfill-free at all its manufacturing facilities in Canada. A total of 21 Ford facilities around the globe maintain zero waste-to-landfill status.
