Qatar Airways became the first airline to operate a commercial flight on a 50:50 blend with synthetic GTL Jet Fuel. In 2011, Shell began production at Pearl GTL in Qatar, a joint venture between Shell and Qatar Petroleum, the world’s largest GTL plant. Shell has selected Ascension Parish in Louisiana as the location for a potential natural gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility. According to the terms of an incentive agreement with the state, the company at a minimum would spend $12.5 billion and create 740 direct jobs, should the project be built.

In addition to its efforts with TAM Airlines, in February 2008, an Airbus A380 aircraft successfully completed the first ever flight by a commercial aircraft using Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) fuel, and in October 2009 Airbus and Qatar Airways undertook the first commercial flight of 50% blended GTL. Brazil’s largest airline, TAM Airlines, and Airbus have conducted the first Jatropha-based biofuel flight in Latin America, using an Airbus A320.

Williams F1 and Mowasalat have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see Williams F1’s advanced simulator technology, currently under development at the Williams Technology Centre, Qatar (WTCQ), applied in Mowasalat’s driver training operations to help improve road safety, passenger comfort and fuel efficiency. Known as the “The Transport Company,” Qatar-based Mowasalat started its activities in the region in October 2004 by providing land transport services and solutions.

The flight, on 23 November 2009, will use Boeing 747 equipment. One of the aircraft engines will be running on a fuel mixture made up of 50% sustainable bio-fuel and 50% traditional kerosene.
