Icelandic power generator HS Orka and Hydrogen Ventures Limited (H2V) will partner to develop a production plant for green methanol using green hydrogen to power the marine sector, as well as domestic and commercial vehicles such as cars, vans and lorries.

Commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus will be the first European truck producer to launch a small series with a hydrogen combustion engine. The initially planned small series of around 200 units is to be delivered to customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and selected non-European countries as early as 2025.

The uses of green methanol for commercial shipping have already been pioneered by Danish shipping giant Maersk. Previous demonstration trials of Geely Emgrand methanol sedans in Iceland achieved an average well to wheel emissions of 46g of CO 2 per km, even lower than electric vehicles in most countries.

The Group’s subsidiary brands have produced the Geely Auto Emgrand methanol sedan while Geely Commercial Vehicles have produced the Farizon M100 heavy truck, which have both passed “China VI” emissions standards. From well to wheel, Geely’s methanol vehicles allow for a 70% reduction in CO 2 emissions compared to gasoline models.

The Model 3 Long Range RWD was launched in the UK in April 2023 , but the all-electric sedan was only sold as a fleet vehicle for commercial customers. The vehicle is not offered in countries like the UK and the Netherlands as of writing.
