The grant will allow CRI to accelerate efforts to commercialize large scale production plants, expanding the market for ETL technology and use of renewable methanol in Europe. CRI developed the ETL technology to produce low-carbon intensity methanol from CO 2 and hydrogen and operates the first production facility of its kind in Iceland.

CRI, founded in 2006 in Reykjavik, Iceland, is developing technology to produce renewable methanol from clean energy and recycled CO 2 emissions. Vulcanol is CRI’s brand name for renewable methanol, produced from CO 2 and hydrogen from renewable sources of electricity (hydro, geothermal, wind and solar).

The systems will be tested in the laboratory and at the CarbFix sequestration project in Iceland, where CO 2 will be injected into a permeable basalt formation at 600 meters in depth. PEM is commercializing a carbon-14 field-ready analyzer with a sensitivity of approximately 1 part per million of fossil fuel-produced CO 2 in ambient air.
