Extracting rare earth elements from coal with plasma assist

Green Car Congress

The US National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is collaborating with the University of Kentucky and their subcontractor Virginia Tech to demonstrate a novel process for the extraction of REEs from coal using plasma. However, domestic coal is of interest as a potentially abundant and easily accessible REE source in the US.

NETL framework for assessing economic viability of recovering REEs from unconventional sources

Green Car Congress

Unconventional REE sources such as domestic coal and coal waste could yield the materials needed for the strong magnets necessary to turn wind into electricity and operate electric vehicles. We then used market prices to develop well-defined methods for determining diverse product values. Tarka, T.J. Mauter, M.S.

EU TyGRE project investigating production of silicon carbide and fuels from waste tires

Green Car Congress

The EU funded project TyGRE ( Ty re gasification residues) is investigating the recycling of tires into new products such as silicon carbide as well as fuels. Europe’s tire waste production is 3 million tonnes per year; currently 65% to 70% of used tires end up in landfills. It will process about 30 kg of tire waste per hour.

NETL researchers create MOF-based luminescent sensor to detect aluminum impurities in rare earth element sources

Green Car Congress

Aluminum is a critical element used in thousands of important products, but it can often interfere with quick and effective extraction of valuable rare earth elements (REEs) from coal waste byproducts. NETL researchers have also developed MOF-based luminescent sensors for REEs. Earlier post.) Earlier post.)
