IRENA sees renewable hydrogen at least cost-possible within decade

Green Car Congress

Hydrogen produced with renewable electricity could compete on costs with fossil fuel alternatives by 2030, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). For that, today’s manufacturing capacity of less than 1 GW would have to massively grow beyond 100 GW in the next 10 to 15 years.

Argonne-led team develops new low-cost cobalt-based catalyst for PEM electrolysis

Green Car Congress

A multi-institutional team led by the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has developed a low-cost cobalt-based catalyst for the production of hydrogen in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). The anode catalyst uses iridium, which has a current market price of around $5,000 per ounce.

PNNL team develops new low-cost method to convert captured CO2 to methane

Green Car Congress

Methane derived from CO 2 and renewable H 2 sources is an attractive fuel, and it has great potential as a renewable hydrogen carrier as an environmentally responsible carbon capture and utilization approach. The authors’ assessment identified further cost savings, in that CO 2 captured by EEMPA can be converted to methane on site.

BNEF report finds hydrogen promising decarbonization pathway, but carbon prices and emissions policies required

Green Car Congress

However, this will only be possible if policies are put in place to help scale up technology, and drive down costs. The report’s findings suggest that renewable hydrogen could be produced for $0.8 Note: Clean hydrogen refers to both renewable and low-carbon hydrogen (from fossil-fuels with CCS). MMBtu) in 2050.
