Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast have developed a novel green route to convert aluminium foil waste into highly active nano-mesoporous alumina (γ-Al 2 O 3 ) (designated as ACFL550). The material shows higher surface area, larger pore volume, and stronger acidity compared to γ-Al 2 O 3 that is produced from the commercial AlCl 3 precursor, AC550. California ARB approves cap-and-trade amendments; linking with Ontario

29th California retail hydrogen fuel station opens

California’s 29 th retail hydrogen station has opened in San Ramon. Built by The Linde Group, this new station is Linde’s third retail hydrogen station in California. Linde developed California’s first retail station in West Sacramento and also operates one in San Juan Capistrano. The San Ramon station offers fuel pressure of 35 and 70 MPa; it is open 24x7. The hydrogen is delivered as liquid H 2 to the station; 33% of the hydrogen is green—i.e., not from fossil sources.

Second Duke Energy project tackling truck idling in NC

36 electric power outlets will help trucks at the Merchants Distributors, LLC (MDI) distribution center in Hickory, NC cut costs and lower air emissions as part of a Duke Energy $320,000 electrification project. Instead of running engines to keep cargo cold, transport refrigeration units (TRUs) at MDI will be able to plug into power outlets at the facility. The practice will help lower exhaust emissions, and is cheaper than the practice of running the TRUs on diesel fuel.

Praj, Gevo to enter commercialization phase of Gevo isobutanol technology for sugarcane and molasses feedstocks

Praj Industries and Gevo announced that Gevo’s proprietary isobutanol technology will now be available for licensing to processors of sugarcane juice and molasses. Stanford, CMU, MIT team reviews challenges to practical implementation of solid-state Li-ion batteries

Toyota, which has been working on solid-state batteries for EVs for a number of years ( earlier post ), is in the news with a report by the Wall Street Journal that it will be ready to commercialize a solid-state battery by 2022. Solid-state lithium-ion batteries, with higher volumetric energy densities than currently available lithium-ion batteries, offer a number of conceptual advantages including improved packaging efficiency; improved safety; and long cycle life.

New battery-electric MINI to be variant of core 3-door model

Report: Toyota to begin mass production in China in 2019 of EVs based on C-HR

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reports that Toyota will begin mass production of EVs in China in 2019, using the C-HR crossover ( earlier post ) as the base. The report says that production volume will be determined by regulations and available subsidies, but that initial volumes will likely be more than 1,000 units per year. The report says that the C-HR-based EV will be limited to the Chinese market, and that Toyota aims to introduce another mass-produced EV in 2020.

Renault Nissan Alliance cumulative electric vehicle sales hit 481,151 units

Cumulative sales of electric vehicles by the Renault Nissan Alliance rose to 481,151 units in the first half of 2017, reaffirming the Alliance’s role as the leading electric car manufacturer for the mass-market segment. The increase was driven primarily by demand for the Nissan LEAF and the Renault ZOE, which remains the Nº 1 EV sold in Europe, and Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV. Porsche leaving FIA WEC LMP1, entering Formula E

Porsche recalls around 21,500 Cayenne diesel cars in Europe for emissions fix

In agreement with the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrtbundesamt – KBA), Porsche has recalled Cayenne 3.0-liter V6 Diesel models in the EU6 emissions class. The sports car manufacturer discovered irregularities in the engine control software during internal investigations and has actively passed on its findings to the KBA. As part of the recall, a software update was agreed with the authorities as a corrective measure.

Honda, Sauber F1 power unit partnership cancelled

Honda Motor Co., announced that its technology partnership with the Sauber F1 Team, which was intended to start from 2018 onwards for the FIA Formula One World Championship (F1) ( earlier post ), has been cancelled. In a brief statement, Honda said that the project, originated after an initial proposal from Sauber, was called-off due to differences in the future direction between Honda and Sauber, recognized during the preparation process for power unit supply systems.

Royal Mail to buy 100 Peugeot electric vans for delivery vehicles

Royal Mail has signed an agreement with Peugeot to purchase 100 Partner L2 Electric vans, to be used as delivery vehicles. The vans will go into service from December 2017 at delivery offices around the UK, supported by a comprehensive rollout of charging infrastructure. Fraser Institute: pipelines 2.5x safer than rail for oil transportation; tankers have safest record

China Yuchai International has delivered 76 diesel-electric hybrid buses, all powered by YC6A270-50 engines, to Siweimei Motor Transport Co., in Shenzhen. This is the second large order from Siweimei since its purchase of 110 units at the end of 2016. The diesel-electric hybrid system used in the buses consists of Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company’s (GYMCL’s) YC6A270-50 7.26-liter diesel engine compliant with China’s National V Emission Standards, and a plug-in charging battery.

Team uses neutron scattering to investigate new Al-Ce alloy in running engine
