As outlined in its current Short-Term Energy Outlook , the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that global consumption of petroleum and liquid fuels averaged 92.3 million b/d from 2019. EIA expects that global liquid fuels consumption will grow by 5.3 million b/d—surpassing 2019 levels.

Researchers at the US Geological Survey (USGS) and its partners have developed a new methodology to identify which mineral commodities important to US manufacturing are at greatest risk to supply disruption. The methodology evaluated the global supply of and US demand for 52 mineral commodities for the years 2007 to 2016.

Global automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler has signed a five-year contract with Norwegian company REEtec AS for the purchase of rare earth oxides. Rare earths play an important role in the automotive and industrial segments. The off-take agreement will supply REEtec with 750tons NdPr per year over 5 years.

Despite the trend toward transportation electrification, the lithium industry has had a rough few years. In 2019, monthly average lithium carbonate prices fell 36% between January and December. In 2019, rechargeable batteries accounted for 54% of total lithium demand, almost entirely from Li-ion battery technologies.

Raven SR signed memoranda of understanding (MOU) to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to All Nippon Airways (ANA) and to Japan Airlines (JAL) for major global routes. Each MOU provides for an initial 50,000 tons of SAF supply in the first year, 2025, with annual incremental increases to 200,000 tons for year 10.

After growing by more than 2% in 2019, global gas use is set to fall by around 4% in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic reduces energy consumption across the global economies. The report shows that medium-term growth will come from increasing cost-competitiveness and increased global access to gas.
