However, while greenhouse gases cause warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere, some aerosols can have a cooling effect on the climate because the aerosol particles cause more of the sun’s light to be reflected away from the planet. In many cases, the strongest climate effects of aerosols are felt far from where the aerosols are emitted.

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants, especially O 3 (ozone), is significantly associated with increasing emphysema, according to a new study led by the University of Washington, Columbia University and the University at Buffalo. Ground-level ozone is mostly produced when ultraviolet light reacts with pollutants from fossil fuels.

Researchers found that air pollution levels right beside a major trucking route within a city were close to levels seen beside Highway 401, despite the road carrying less than one-tenth of the vehicle traffic. The California Air Resources Board released GHG emissions data for 2018 showing that emissions remain below 1990 levels but are effectively flat compared to 2017, while the economy grew by 4.3%. Total statewide 2018 GHG emissions were 425.3 million metric tons between 2017 and 2018, the first such decline since 2013.

Many countries regulate ozone because of the damage the pollutant does to plants and people. Since the 1990s, tighter controls on emissions of those ingredients have lessened ozone pollution in many European and US cities. The researchers think the harmful effects of surface ozone pollution are much less recognized.
