Nornickel investigating using mining tailings to capture and store CO2

Green Car Congress

Russia-based Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel)—the world’s largest nickel producer—is studying the potential for mining tailings to capture and store CO 2. Ore mining and concentration results in waste rock, or tailings—fine-grained rock (less than 0.4 In 2021, Nornickel extracted 41.2 mm) that looks like sand.

DOE researchers investigate economic and environmental impacts of converting wet waste to renewable diesel

Green Car Congress

An open-access paper on their results is published in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. Meanwhile, wet waste feedstocks, such as animal manure and fats, oils, and greases (FOG), represent another important category of resources that could be utilized to produce MCCI bioblendstocks due to its abundant availability.

HyMethShip seeks to fuel ship engines with hydrogen from methanol

Green Car Congress

The EU-funded HyMethShip project developed a system that innovatively combined a membrane reactor, a CO 2 capture system, a storage system for CO 2 and methanol as well as a hydrogen-fueled combustion engine to power ships. The bottom part shows how hydrogen for the engine is obtained from methanol in the reactor (blue arrow).

SGH2 building largest green hydrogen production facility in California; gasification of waste into H2

Green Car Congress

The plant will feature SGH2’s technology, which will gasify recycled mixed paper waste to produce green hydrogen that reduces carbon emissions by two to three times more than green hydrogen produced using electrolysis and renewable energy, and is five to seven times cheaper. The facility will process 42,000 tons of recycled waste annually.

Study suggests new strategy for storing hydrogen, using natural gas as stabilizer

Green Car Congress

A recent study has suggested a new strategy for storing hydrogen, using natural gas as a stabilizer. The research proposed a practical gas phase modulator based synthesis of a hydrogen-natural gas blend (HNGB) without generating chemical waste after dissociation for the immediate service.

Mote begins engineering work on biomass-to-hydrogen plant with carbon capture

Green Car Congress

Start-up Mote is establishing its first facility to convert wood waste into hydrogen fuel while capturing, utilizing, and sequestering CO 2 emissions resulting from its process. Mote utilizes wood waste from farms, forestry, and other resources where it would otherwise be open-air burned for disposal, left to decompose, or sent to a landfill.

GM heat pump recovers energy from EV battery to power heating & propulsion while helping conserve range: Ultium Energy Recovery

Green Car Congress

GM is introducing a patented heat-pump in its Ultium-based EVs that captures and repurposes waste energy from the battery. Through the Ultium Platform’s energy recovery system, this waste energy can increase a vehicle’s range, reduce battery energy needed for heating, increase charging speed and even enable sportier driving.
