From January 2021 through September 2022, Tesla deployed a staggering 132.9 GWh onto roads worldwide—more than double the 65.6 GWh deployed by its competitor BYD over the same period, according to Adamas Intelligence. In September 2022 alone, Tesla deployed 13.9 GWh of battery capacity onto roads globally versus 6.7 GWh deployed by BYD. Source: Adamas Intelligence.

Norwegian battery firm Freyr recently confirmed plans for a Georgia factory that will supply batteries for energy storage. Dubbed "Giga America," the factory will be located on a 368-acre tract in Coweta County, on the southwestern edge of the Atlanta metropolitan area, according to a Freyr press release. Production will be stepped up in phases.

Toyota Motor will join seven other leading Japanese companies—Sony Group, NEC, Toyota supplier Denso, NTT, chipmaker Kioxia Holdings, SoftBank and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Grou—in working with the Japanese government in a new next-generation semiconductor venture named Rapidus. The companies are investing a combined ¥7.3 billion (US$52.2 billion) and the government is contributing ¥70 billion (US$500 million).

Congressional lawmakers are seeking to delay requirements for domestically sourced content under the revamped federal EV tax credit. Bills recently introduced in the Senate and House of Representatives would create a more gradual phase-in for these requirements than is laid out in the new EV tax credit rules enacted under the Inflation Reduction.

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited has successfully developed , tested and demonstrated its own in-house lithium extraction sorbent, VULSORB, for sustainable lithium extraction from the Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field and the Zero Carbon Lithium Project. VULSORB demonstrated higher performance and lower water consumption for lithium extraction in Vulcan’s pilot plant, compared with commercially available sorbents tested by the Company.

Fusion Fuel ( earlier post ) completed the interconnection of its H2Évora plant to the Portuguese electric grid and has successfully commissioned the facility. The demonstration project, comprising 15 HEVO-Solar units and associated balance-of-plant equipment, will produce 15 tons of green hydrogen per year and avoid the emission of 135 tons of CO 2 annually.

China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and Daihatsu Motor, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toyota, announced an MOU of Strategic Cooperation on battery supply and battery technologies to promote e-mobility in Japan. Under the agreement, CATL intends to provide stable supply of EV batteries to the electric vehicles of Daihatsu, an expert in compact passenger cars and one of the oldest car manufacturers in Japan.
