Wakeup! The Sea Level is Rising & Another Island Nation’s People Are About To Become Climate Change Refugees

Creative Greenius

Here is why I spend all of my time working on climate change issues and why we are gathering on the beach here in Southern California on October 24 in Manhattan Beach for 350.org org International Day of Climate Action to demonstrate what sea level rise will do to us here on the West Coast. We know better.

ARPA-E selects SwRI to create more effective burner to reduce methane emissions

Green Car Congress

Burners currently used on the field commonly perform below target specifications, especially under crosswind conditions, which results in a significant portion of this powerful greenhouse gas escaping into the atmosphere. The three-year, $2.9-million The three-year, $2.9-million

MIT Researchers Elucidate Model for Escape of Underground Methane in Frozen Regions; Current Rate of Escape May be Much Faster Than Earlier Believed

gas hydrate accumulations in ocean sediments and permafrost—escapes. Their findings, published online 29 August in the AGU Journal of Geophysical Research , also suggest that methane trapped under the ocean may already be escaping through vents in the sea floor at a much faster rate than previously believed. Study: annual climate impact of wild pigs could be greater than 1.1M cars

Green Car Congress

Their study appears in Global Change Biology. Feral swine are descendants of escaped or released pigs. The researchers used predictive population models coupled with advanced mapping techniques to estimate the climate damage wild pigs are causing across five continents.

Study findings suggest that switching from coal to natural gas would do little for global climate

Green Car Congress

The study will appear next month in the peer-reviewed journal Climatic Change Letters. Relying more on natural gas would reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, but it would do little to help solve the climate problem. However, the effects of natural gas on climate change have been difficult to calculate.

Study finds methane emissions from coal mines ~50% higher than previously thought

Green Car Congress

The study is the first to attempt to account for methane escaping from abandoned mines. The team cites deeper mines, more abandoned mines, and a greater percentage of surface mines from which methane escapes more freely as reasons why. Under the same conditions, the amount of methane escaping from working mines would be cut in half.

Study finds urban waste heat affects temperatures across thousands of miles, warming some areas and cooling others

Green Car Congress

The burning of fossil fuel not only emits greenhouse gases but also directly affects temperatures because of heat that escapes from sources like buildings and cars. Although much of this waste heat is concentrated in large cities, it can change atmospheric patterns in a way that raises or lowers temperatures across considerable distances.
