GM begins manufacturing Spark EV electric motor in Baltimore

General Motors has begun manufacturing the electric motor for the Spark EV at its Baltimore Operations plant in White Marsh, Md. Earlier post.). The heart of the Spark EV’s propulsion system is the GM-designed, oil-cooled, permanent magnet motor. Putting more than half a million road miles on development versions of the Spark EV enabled engineers to optimize the performance of the motor by using a specifically designed bar-wound copper stator and unique rotor configuration.

ExxonMobil and Electrovaya Launch Electric Car Sharing Program in Baltimore

ExxonMobil is sponsoring an all-electric car-sharing and rental program, called AltCar, at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore, MD. The 10-vehicle program (five now, with a further five cars to be made available to the public in the next few weeks) uses Electrovaya’s low-speed Maya 300.

Veolia Transportation is launching Baltimore’s first propane autogas taxi fleet. The company has also installed an autogas fueling station in Baltimore to serve 50 Checker and Yellow taxis. Veolia Transportation is Baltimore City’s largest operator of taxicab services. The company—the largest private provider of multiple modes of transportation in North America—is converting 300 of its taxis nationwide from gasoline to propane autogas.

Nestlé Waters North America adds 155 new medium-duty propane autogas trucks to delivery fleet

Deployments in 2016 will include New York City, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Nestlé Waters North America is adding more than 150 medium-duty beverage delivery trucks fueled by propane autogas. Over the vehicles’ lifetime, the 155 Ford F-650 trucks will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 24.6 million pounds. These units will be deployed beginning in April.

Coulomb Technologies ships more than 2,400 public and commercial charging stations in ChargePoint America Program

PJM/Better Place study finds unmanaged charging of 1M electric cars could add $750M in annual wholesale energy costs; need for CNO-managed smart charging

The study considered a distribution of 1 million EVs in the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area and modeled the impact of charging the EV batteries in three scenarios: unmanaged charging; consumer-price-incentivized charging; and managed charging via a Central Network Operator (CNO). The greater Washington – Baltimore area was selected for modelling because it already experiences transmission congestion issues and is a targeted area for electric vehicle adoption.

Univ. of Delaware and state partner on EV charging station project to support longer electric trips

The project also helps fill a regional gap for recharging capabilities between Baltimore and Philadelphia, urban areas where charging stations are more common. Hyundai and Kia license Paice’s hybrid vehicle technology, ending litigation
