Volvo Cars? Chengdu car plant powered by 100% renewable electricity; 65% hydropower

The 100% renewable electricity mix in Chengdu is the result of a newly signed supply contract and will reduce the plant’s CO 2 emissions by more than 11,000 tonnes per year. Until recently, the Chengdu plant already sourced 70% of its electricity from renewable sources. By 2040, Volvo Cars aims to be a climate-neutral company.

Volvo Cars first carmaker to explore fossil-free steel with SSAB and HYBRIT

The global steel industry accounts for around 7% of global direct carbon emissions, due to the fact that the industry is currently dominated by an iron ore-based steel making technology, using blast furnaces depending on coking coal. Volvo Cars’ ambition is to be a fully electric car brand by 2030, with only pure electric cars in its line-up.

Mack LR Electric refuse truck to enter production in 2021

Volvo Group’s American subsidiary Mack Trucks announced plans to commercialize the Mack LR Electric, its refuse model equipped with a fully electric integrated Mack drivetrain. Orders for the Mack LR Electric will open in Q4 2020, with deliveries beginning in 2021.

Volvo Cars successfully places first green bond, raises €500M

The proceeds of the bond will be used to fund the design, development and manufacturing of fully electric cars in line with the company’s recently established Green Finance Framework. As a first tangible step towards its 2040 vision the company aims to reduce its lifecycle carbon footprint per car by 40% between 2018 and 2025.
