Testing results on a custom modified reactor system demonstrate the ability to convert cellulosic material into sugars with high conversion at a throughput processing rate of 2.5 tons a day. This processing rate represents an order of magnitude greater than the previous CTS reactor system and contains design features that ensure further scalability.

Plug Power signed a hydrogen supply deal with Amazon to provide liquid green hydrogen starting in 2025 to help decarbonize Amazon’s operations as part of its commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040. Specifically, Amazon and Plug have signed a deal for Plug to supply 10,950 tons per year of liquid green hydrogen to fuel Amazon operations. Using Plug’s electrolyzers, liquefaction capabilities and cryogenic tankers, Plug will deliver hydrogen to Amazon beginning Jan. 1, 2025.

Following a competitive grant solicitation, the California Air Resources Board has chosen San Diego-based nonprofit organization Pedal Ahead as the administrator to implement California’s statewide Electric Bicycle Incentive Project. The equity-focused program is expected to launch officially in the first quarter of 2023. The goal is to encourage adoption of electric bicycles as a replacement for in-town motor vehicle trips by helping low-income Californians afford to purchase e-bikes.

Mexico has formed a state-run company called Litio para Mexico (LitioMx) to mine the country’s lithium. Canada-based rare earths processor Neo Performance Materials ( earlier post ) will acquire from Hudson Resources an exploration license covering the Sarfartoq Carbonatite Complex in southwest Greenland. The project hosts a mineral deposit that is enriched in neodymium and praseodymium, two essential elements for rare earth permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and high-efficiency electric motors and pumps that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The California Air Resources Board approved the Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) rule. The rule establishes a year-by-year roadmap so that by 2035 100% of new cars and light trucks sold in California will be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The ACC program was first adopted by CARB in 2012, including the Low-Emission Vehicle (LEV) III Criteria Regulation; the LEV Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Regulation; and the Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Regulation.

Tritium DCFC Limited opened its first US-based EV fast charger manufacturing facility, located in Lebanon, Tennessee. The facility will employ more than 500 Tennesseans over the next five years. Tritium’s Tennessee facility will initially produce the company’s award-winning RTM fast charger, and is expected to start production on the PKM150 early next year.

Mercedes-Benz is exclusively producing the all-electric EQS SUV at its North American passenger vehicle plant. These vehicles rolling off the line is a key step in Mercedes-Benz Cars’ global initiative to produce eight all-electric vehicles at seven sites on three continents this year. The full-size EQS SUV is integrated in series production at the Mercedes-Benz Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, which has been the production site for large Mercedes-Benz SUVs since 1997.
