Researchers at ORNL, in partnership with FCA US and Nemak USA, have developed a new suite of aluminum-based alloys that could give automakers a boost in achieving ambitious fuel economy goals. Current alloys inhibit engine efficiency because they soften at the peak temperatures present in highly efficient advanced engines.

Chevron Products Company, a Chevron USA Inc. division, maker of the Delo brand of heavy duty engine oils, lubricants and coolants, unveiled a new category of heavy duty motor oil designed to address the growth of severe duty applications in on- and off-highway markets. Improved fuel economy over SAE 15W-40 conventional oils.

A collaboration between research teams at Shell and Gordon Murray Design (GMD) recently led to the development of an innovative concept engine lubricant capable of achieving a 6.5% improvement in fuel efficiency on an urban cycle, and a 4.6% 25 city car as the test bed, Shell engineers formulated an ultra low viscosity 0W-10 motor oil.
