The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for airplanes used in commercial aviation and large business jets. Aircraft covered by the proposed rule account for 10% of all US transportation greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 3% of total US GHG emissions.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that greenhouse gas emissions in California in 2016 fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—a reduction roughly equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

The California Assembly is considering a bill ( AB-378 ) that would integrate air quality performance into the state’s greenhouse-gas (GHG) cap-and- trade program. The bill also prohibits ARB, after 2020, from allocating allowances pursuant to cap-and-trade industrial facility that does not meet the air pollutant emissions standards.

Emissions from farms outweigh all other human sources of fine-particulate air pollution in much of the United States, Europe, Russia and China, according a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters , a journal of the American Geophysical Union. Pollutants other than ammonia should probably be targeted for abatement, Paulot said.

Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions were flat for a third straight year in 2016 even as the global economy grew, according to the International Energy Agency. The decline was driven by a surge in shale gas supplies and more attractive renewable power that displaced coal.

The European Environment Agency’s (EEA’s) “ Air quality in Europe — 2019 report ” shows that almost all Europeans living in cities are still exposed to air pollution levels that exceed the health-based air quality guidelines (AQGs) set by the World Health Organization (WHO). About 374,000 of those deaths occurred in the European Union (EU).
