BMW Group sources sustainable cobalt worth around €100M from Morocco for fifth-gen batteries

The cobalt market has four types of cobalt produced: cut cathode; broken cathode; briquettes and powder; ingot and round, according to Sam Wang, trading and product manager for Manatrade AG, the marketing and trading arm of Managem Group.). The two companies already signed a memorandum of understanding on the direct purchase of cobalt from Morocco in Marrakesh in January 2019. The BMW Group has also localized battery production in Thailand, where it works with the Dräxlmaier Group.

The Renault-Nissan Tangier plant inaugurated its second production line. The result of a public-private partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Renault group, the second line makes the plant the largest in Africa. The new line will increase the site’s output capacity to 340,000 vehicles a year, starting in 2014. It required an investment of €400 million and will produce Dacia Sandero and Dacia Sandero Stepway, two leading models in the Dacia range.

Roskill: Spread of COVID-19 threatens cobalt supply; bottlenecks out of DRC
