New research from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, finds that the discharge water from ships’ exhaust gas treatment systems—i.e., A scrubber is used on ships to clean exhaust gases, primarily to reduce emissions of sulfur oxides to the atmosphere. Vitesco Technologies, formerly (until September 2019) the Continental Powertrain Division, has won a major contract from an European vehicle manufacturer for the supply of innovative electric heating elements for diesel catalytic converters. In the Super Clean Electrified Diesel, the efficiency of exhaust gas aftertreatment rises to 97%.

The cleaner engine is able to deliver ultra-low NO x by managing exhaust gas temperatures to ensure rapid catalyst light-off and by maintaining aftertreatment temperatures at optimum operating conditions in all driving conditions. It also uses existing components and supply chains.

Modifications included a DME-adapted high-pressure common rail pump, adapted injectors as well as a low-pressure fuel-supply system able to deliver DME at 10 bar and return the injectors’—as well as the common rail pump—backflows accordingly. With a new DC/DC converter, the heating discs of the electrically heated EMICAT catalyst ( earlier post ) can now also be supplied with electricity in high-voltage vehicles. If it is required and restarted, the exhaust flow is also cold at first—possibly too cold to convert pollutant gases in the catalyst.

Under laboratory-simulated diesel exhaust conditions, this mixed-phase oxide material was superior to Pt in terms of cost, thermal durability, and catalytic activity for NO oxidation.
