Siemens Corporate Technology , Siemens’ research organization, supplied the drive systems for the prototypes of two electric cars shown at the Geneva Motor Show. The prototype has a central 270 kilowatts (362 hp) motor with torque of 950 Nm and achieves an average range of approximately 200 kilometers.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Bosch is highlighting its solid-state Li-ion battery technology, saying that the technology for electric cars could be production-ready in as little as five years. In Europe, more than a third of all new cars will be electrically powered—the majority as plug-in hybrids.

Battery cost and size mean that all-electric cars still have a relatively limited operating range. With the Range Extender, the electric car has its effective range increased by a thousand kilometers, yet with carbon dioxide emissions below or way below 50 g/km. Here too the electric motor is a 111 hp (82 kW) unit.
