DOE researchers investigate economic and environmental impacts of converting wet waste to renewable diesel

Green Car Congress

estimated that with conversion by hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and upgrading, the wet waste resource availability in the United States could be converted to jet fuel that is equivalent to about 24% of the U.S. Skaggs et al. demand in 2016. Meanwhile, the plant size has a great impact on the MFSP.

Fraunhofer researchers developing ammonia-based systems for mobile energy in infrastructure, transportation and industry

Green Car Congress

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems IMM are developing ammonia-based systems for a mobile, decentralized energy supply in the infrastructure, transportation and industry sectors. Ammonia (NH 3 ) could become an alternative solution to allow the required hydrogen to be stored and transported with ease.

VW Commercial Vehicles unveils e-BULLI; electric T1

Green Car Congress

To convert an historic Bulli over to a drive system producing zero emissions, VWCV engineers and designers formed a team along with drive system experts from Volkswagen Group Components and the eClassics company, which specialises in electric car conversions. They are transferred by eClassics into a battery system appropriate for the T1.

Sandia team puts power into local grid with supercritical CO2 closed-loop Brayton-cycle turbine

Green Car Congress

Because so much energy is lost turning steam back into water in the Rankine cycle, at most a third of the power in the steam can be converted into electricity. In comparison, the Brayton cycle has a theoretical conversion efficiency upwards of 50%.

Cornell team suggests engineered bacteria could address current limitations of energy storage technologies

Green Car Congress

The study supplies information to determine the best design based on needs. We are suggesting a new approach where we stitch together biological and non-biological electrochemical engineering to create a new method to store energy. At the same time, having many options also creates too many engineering choices.

Purdue, EPFL team propose Hydricity concept for integrated co-production of H2 and electricity from solar thermal energy

Green Car Congress

In the co-production mode, the co-produced hydrogen is stored for use in a turbine-based hydrogen water power (H2WP) cycle with calculated hydrogen-to-electricity efficiency of 65-70%—comparable to fuel cell efficiencies. Similarly, in standalone hydrogen mode, pressurized hydrogen is produced at efficiencies approaching ~50%.

Report for IPCC finds renewables could supply up to 77% of global energy by 2050 under most optimistic scenario; need for enabling public policies and investments

Green Car Congress

Up to 77% of the world’s energy supply could be met by six key renewables by mid-century under the most optimistic scenario if backed by the right enabling public policies, according to a new report by more than 120 researchers working with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
