MHI Develops Hybrid Turbocharger to Generate Electricity Utilizing Exhaust Gas from Marine Engines

Green Car Congress

MHI) has developed a generator-integrated hybrid turbocharger for marine propulsion diesel engines which utilizes engine exhaust gas not only to drive the turbocharger but also to generate electricity. The event will mark the world’s first on-board testing of a hybrid turbocharger using a commercial ship in actual operation.

Tula presenting diesel Dynamic Skip Fire technology at Future Diesel Powertrain Summit in Shanghai

Green Car Congress

dDSF improves fuel efficiency by firing all events at the most efficient ratio of air to fuel, allowing optimal combustion at all engine output levels. Cylinder deactivation also reduces excess engine airflow, increasing exhaust temperatures. Additional synergies can be gained by coupling dDSF with hybridization.

Cummins & Tula demonstrate Diesel Dynamic Skip Fire (dDSF) cylinder deactivation; up to 66% reduction in NOx on CARB LLC #7

Green Car Congress

dDSF improves fuel efficiency by firing all events at the most efficient ratio of air to fuel, allowing optimal combustion at all engine output levels. The reduction of tailpipe NO x is achieved primarily by optimized exhaust temperature control, resulting in significantly improved conversion efficiency of the aftertreatment system.

ICCT-led test of 73 Euro 6 diesels finds large difference in NOx results under NEDC and more realistic WLTC

Green Car Congress

The three main NOx control technologies currently on the market are exhaust gas recirculation (EGR); lean-burn NO x traps (LNT); and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). EGR systems recirculate a portion of exhaust gas to the combustion chamber, lowering the combustion temperature and the production of engine-out NO x.
