EIA projects increases in global energy consumption and emissions through 2050

Green Car Congress

Renewables will be the primary source for new electricity generation, but natural gas, coal, and increasingly batteries will be used to help meet load and support grid reliability. Projections for the United States in IEO2021 are consistent with those released in the Annual Energy Outlook 2021. —Stephen Nalley.

ICCT LCA study finds only battery and hydrogen fuel-cell EVs have potential to be very low-GHG passenger vehicle pathways

Green Car Congress

For battery EVs, the GHG emissions for “fuel/electricity” production are dominated by the coal and natural gas used in electricity generation. Importantly, battery EVs can be expected to operate with progressively fewer upstream emissions over their lifetimes as electricity grids “green.” Source: The ICCT. Source: The ICCT.

Electric vs. Gasoline Cars: Uncovering the Real Climate Savior

The Truth About Cars

For instance, electricity generated from coal or natural gas is associated with higher carbon emissions, while renewable sources like wind or solar energy contribute negligible carbon pollution. Notably, in 2020, renewable energy sources rose to become the second-most dominant source of electricity in the United States.

To Store or Not to Store: That is the Question

Green Car Congress

Typical daily grid demand. “ Why do you need energy storage on the grid, when the grid is full of power plants that generate all the energy that is needed? ” It would seem like a good question to ask and applies the same logic has been used for the past fifty years in determining grid strategy.
