The market uptake of electrically-chargeable vehicles (ECVs) is directly correlated to a country’s GDP per capita, showing that affordability is a major barrier to consumers. All countries with an ECV market share of less than 1% have a GDP below €30,000, including EU member states in Central and Eastern Europe, but also Italy and Greece.

Sales were primarily driven by the Urus, with 6,087 vehicles delivered, and the Huracán, boasting 3,962 units. Though, despite these being Lamborghini’s most affordable models, both the Huracán and Urus retail well above $200,000.

The EU formally approved a law that would ban the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2035 in an attempt to accelerate consumers’ choice of electric powertrains. Proposed in July 2021, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Romania all pushed to delay the sales ban in mid-2022. I’d love to hear from you!

This new report shows that sales of electrically-chargeable cars in the EU increased by 110% over the past three years. During the same period however, the number of charging points grew by just 58% (to less than 200,000)—demonstrating that investment in infrastructure is not keeping pace with increased sales of electric vehicles.
