A team from the University of Tennessee and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has the fuel savings due to fuel economy improvements over the past 43 years amount to approximately two trillion gallons of gasoline. Also since 1975, light-duty vehicle travel increased by 134% while fuel use increased by only 37%.

Manufacturers have been adopting technologies that improve the efficiency of light-duty vehicles and allow them to achieve greater fuel economy. Gasoline hybrid vehicles accounted for 4%, while plug-in hybrid, all-electric, and fuel cell vehicles had a combined total of 3%. Source: DOE, US EPA.

In 2018, Iowa produced 4.21 billion gallons of fuel ethanol—26% of the 16 billion gallons produced in the United States—according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Fuel ethanol is used as an oxygenate in gasoline and to produce E-85 fuel.

According to the American Public Transit Association (APTA), alternative fuels and advanced hybrid drivetrains powered more than half of all transit buses in 2017 and 2018. In the ten-year period from 2008 to 2018, the share of conventional diesel buses dropped from 70% to 42%.
