In 2018, plug-in light-duty vehicles on the road displaced 323 million gallons of gasoline—about one quarter of a percent of all gasoline used in the United States, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE). Following on the introduction of R33 Blue Diesel ( earlier post ), Bosch, Shell, and Volkswagen have now developed a low-carbon gasoline. The average household spent about $60,000 in 2018, with $9,800 of that on transportation (16%), according to the US Department of Labor. Gasoline and motor oil, public transportation, and other vehicle expenditures such as maintenance, repairs, insurance, etc. Transportation expenditures were second only to housing (33%).
