QuantumScape Corporation, a developer of next generation solid-state lithium-metal batteries for use in electric vehicles, and Kensington Capital Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), announced a definitive agreement for a business combination that would result in QuantumScape becoming a publicly listed company.

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced the Mazda RX-8 SPIRIT R, a special edition version of its four-door, four-seat rotary-engined sports car. Mazda will cease RX-8 production will end in June 2012 and SPIRIT R will be the final special edition model.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has revised its calendar year 2012 sales and production plans, targeting worldwide production of 10,050,000 vehicles and worldwide sales of 9,760,000 vehicles for the year. The company is planning a 28% increase in production of Toyota vehicles alone to 8,870,000 units.

Volvo Car Corporation is postponing its plans to produce a full hybrid based on a diesel engine and instead will introduce a series-produced plug-in diesel hybrid (PHEV) in Europe as early as 2012. Volvo Cars confirmed that it will introduce a series-produced plug-in hybrid diesel as early as 2012. Volvo had first suggested the 2012 date for a diesel PHEV in September 2009. The Volvo Car Corporation has begun production of the C30 Electric ( earlier post ); initial deliveries to leasing customers, mainly companies, authorities and governmental bodies, will take place immediately after the summer. Volvo says it will build about 250 cars by the end of 2012, possibly more if market interest takes off.

Mazda Motor Corporation has signed formal agreements and begun preparations to establish a Mazda vehicle production facility in Mexico and a sales company in Brazil, in alliance with Sumitomo Corporation. Mazda will hold 70% of both the production plant and the sales company; Sumitomo will hold 30% of each.
