Study: stopping at red lights exposes drivers to high levels of particulates

Green Car Congress

Researchers at the University of Surrey have now found that where drivers spend just 2% of the journey time at traffic intersections managed by lights, this short duration contributes to about 25% of total exposure to nanoparticle emissions. Their study is published in the journal Atmospheric Environment.

Sensor Networks Help Fight Floods and Noise Pollution

Cars That Think

A challenge for New York City's efforts to reduce the negative impacts of street-level flooding and noise pollution has been how to measure these issues effectively. FloodNet sensors are mounted on sign posts and light poles at select flood prone locations in NYC.

Ricardo testing finds DPF regeneration spikes particulate emissions, resulting in exceedance of Euro limits

Green Car Congress

Testing of two popular Euro 6d-temp diesels by Ricardo, commissioned by the environmental NGO Transport & Environment (T&E), has found that the periodic regeneration of diesel particulate filters (DPFs) in the light-duty vehicles can generate spikes of particulate emissions of more than 1,000 times the normal rate.

ICCT-sponsored study of in-use testing of 3 Tier2-Bin5, CA LEV-II light-duty diesels finds wide variation of emissions against the limits

Green Car Congress

In-use testing of three light duty diesel vehicles—certified to US-EPA Tier2-Bin5 and California LEV-II ULEV emissions limits— found a wide variation in real world emissions performance relative to the regulatory limits. diesels and one 3.0L diesel) over pre-defined test routes exhibiting diverse driving conditions.

5GAA hosts C-V2X connected vehicle demo in Berlin

Green Car Congress

5GAA C-V2X use cases showcased at the Berlin event included: Traffic Management Solutions: Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) and Red-Light Violation Warning (RLVW) to Vehicle. Waiting at the red light is not only time consuming, but idling, braking and accelerating release more pollutants.

Discovery of mechanism for atmospheric particle formation suggests need for ammonia emission regulations

Green Car Congress

An international team of researchers has shed light on one way new particles are forming in the upper troposphere. Ammonia is convected upward during events like the Asian monsoon. There are no factories or farms, and planes are thought to make up most of the pollutants in this area. The emission sources are limited up there.

Toyota launches NOx-scrubbing billboard campaign for Mirai

Green Car Congress

Thirty-seven billboards in Los Angeles and San Francisco will create 24,960 square feet of pollution scrubbing surface and reverse the equivalent of 5,285 vehicles worth of nitrogen dioxide (NO x ) emissions per month. This “catalytic converter” of billboards uses a titanium-dioxide-coated vinyl to purify the surrounding air.
