Volkswagen Group to expand EV production worldwide to 16 sites by end of 2022; partnerships with battery manufacturers

This was announced by Matthias Müller, CEO of Volkswagen AG, at the Group’s Annual Media Conference in Berlin. Audi prices e-tron starting at €80,000; new Audi Sport e-tron GT promised for 2020

Audi’s first fully electric series-produced model, the Audi e-tron, will be available in Germany starting at €80,000 (US$98,800), said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management, at Audi’s annual press conference in Ingolstadt. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (Auto Alliance) is strongly supporting the passage of Maryland’s SB 1234 , a bill that would require the State of Maryland to purchase zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) for state fleets. The bill phases in a requirement that, by fiscal 2026, 50% of light-duty vehicles purchased for the State vehicle fleet be zero-emission vehicles.

New Pierburg air blower with speed-controlled motor for reduction of gasoline engine emissions

Secondary air systems are used to reduce gasoline engine emissions by accelerating catalytic converter heat-up. Pierburg GmbH has now further developed the associated secondary air blower and provided it with a speed-controlled motor. The latter allows secondary air injection across a much wider engine map range and hence, at any given point in time, the precise air mass required for accelerating converter heat-up is injected into the exhaust system.

Consortium led by POSCO, Samsung SDI to build $54M cathode materials plant in Chile for EVs

A consortium led by South Korea’s POSCO and Samsung SDI, and including China’s Sichuan Fulin Industrial Group and Chile’s Molyment, has won a bid to build a cathode materials plant in Chile to support that country’s Li-ion batteries project. POSCO and Samsung SDI will jointly invest about $54 million in the plant, which will produce 3,200 tonnes of cathode a year starting in the second half of 2021, which will be used to make lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

UWO team discovers new conductive phase during carbon-coating process of lithium iron phosphate; potential to improve performance

The formation of this phase is related to the reducing capability of the carbon coating process.
