NASA researchers have begun a series of flights using the agency’s DC-8 flying laboratory to study the effects of alternate biofuel on engine performance, emissions and aircraft-generated contrails at altitude. According to a study commissioned by the Washington, DC-based Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), NO x emissions measured from propane autogas school buses were substantially lower than those measured from diesel school buses. NO x was reduced by 96% and carbon dioxide by 13% with a propane bus.

NASA’s DC-8 research aircraft are visiting Germany for three weeks and will fly together with the DLR A320 Advanced Technology Research Aircraft (ATRA). During these campaigns, NASA’s DC-8 flew with alternative fuels, while smaller research jets such as the NASA HU-25 Falcon and the DLR Falcon 20 conducted measurements in its exhaust stream.

In addition to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, condensation trails and the resulting cirrus clouds lead to a significant climate impact. It takes off from the DLR facility in Oberpfaffenhofen and measures the exhaust gas composition and condensation trail properties at distances ranging from 100 meters to 20 kilometers behind the ATRA.
