NASA-led study finds 50 vol% biofuel blend reduces soot particle emissions during aircraft cruising; reduced climatic impact of contrails

Green Car Congress

Of these effects, the largest uncertainties are associated with aviation-induced cloudiness, both directly from contrail-induced cirrus clouds and indirectly from the contribution of black carbon, organic and sulfate aerosols that may act as cloud condensation nuclei and ice nuclei. —Moore et al.

NASA begins ACCESS flight research to study effects of biojet fuels on engine performance, emissions and contrails

Green Car Congress

NASA researchers have begun a series of flights using the agency’s DC-8 flying laboratory to study the effects of alternate biofuel on engine performance, emissions and aircraft-generated contrails at altitude. Survey black carbon and gas-phase emissions and contrail properties from commercial aircraft at cruise in air-traffic corridors.

Study finds propane school buses significantly decrease NOx emissions compared to diesel

Green Car Congress

According to a study commissioned by the Washington, DC-based Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), NO x emissions measured from propane autogas school buses were substantially lower than those measured from diesel school buses. NO x was reduced by 96% and carbon dioxide by 13% with a propane bus.

NASA and DLR to conduct joint flight tests on alternative fuel emissions with focus on ice crystals

Green Car Congress

NASA’s DC-8 research aircraft are visiting Germany for three weeks and will fly together with the DLR A320 Advanced Technology Research Aircraft (ATRA). During these campaigns, NASA’s DC-8 flew with alternative fuels, while smaller research jets such as the NASA HU-25 Falcon and the DLR Falcon 20 conducted measurements in its exhaust stream.

DLR wrapping up ECLIF in-flight study of emissions from alternative aviation fuels; potential for improved fuel design

Green Car Congress

In addition to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, condensation trails and the resulting cirrus clouds lead to a significant climate impact. It takes off from the DLR facility in Oberpfaffenhofen and measures the exhaust gas composition and condensation trail properties at distances ranging from 100 meters to 20 kilometers behind the ATRA.
