The State of California has the highest ratio of car ownership anywhere in the world, and in Los Angeles, almost 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions come for the transportation sector. A new study published in the journal Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board estimates total automobile air emission costs in 86 US metropolitan areas to be US$145 million/day, with Los Angeles, California, and New York City (each US$23 million per day) having the highest totals.

The California Energy Commission has awarded the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) $1.9 million to develop the California Center for Sustainable Communities. The Center is to research the potential energy savings from better community design, integrated land use, and transportation practices.

The study also shows that the proportion of gaseous aromatic compounds—apart from benzene—in hydrocarbon emissions is two to three times greater in pollution plumes in Paris than in Los Angeles, even though the total quantity of hydrocarbons emitted in Los Angeles remains considerably greater than in Paris.
