General Motors and Lithium Americas will jointly invest to develop the Thacker Pass mine in Nevada, which is the largest known source of lithium in the United States and the third-largest in the world. Lithium Americas estimates the lithium extracted and processed from the project can support production of up to 1 million EVs per year.

Both companies will work towards creating a Bolivian domestic lithium battery supply chain to develop the region’s electric mobility market. Bolivia is lithium-rich; the USGS estimates identified lithium reserves in the country to be 21 million tons—ahead of Argentina and Chile, the other members of the “lithium triangle”.

Ford Motor Company and Rio Tinto have signed a non-binding global memorandum of understanding (MOU) jointly to develop more sustainable and secure supply chains for battery and low-carbon materials to be used in Ford vehicles. Rio Tinto has entered into a binding agreement to acquire the Rincon lithium project in Argentina from Rincon Mining , a company owned by funds managed by the private equity group Sentient Equity Partners, for $825 million. The project is a long-life, scaleable resource capable of producing battery-grade lithium carbonate.

In South America, brine operations have been much less affected. However, production losses in Argentina are likely to be approximately 35% in 2020, as already delayed expansion plans become delayed further, Roskill said. Roskill anticipates 2020 production losses in Chile to be kept below 20%.
