Approved in 2009 and first implemented in 2011, the LCFS requires California fuel providers to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuels at least 10% by 2020, by phasing in less carbon-intensive fuel technologies. Similarly, fuels and fuel blendstocks with CIs below the standard generate credits.

The Methanol Institute (MI) released two new reports on the use of methanol as a safe, efficient and clean alternative fuel for cars, trucks and buses. Density values of the different blends are within the European standards limits. RVP increases with the addition of methanol and ethanol in low and middle blends (up to 25 % vol.)

But, we argue that diesel needs an even playing field set by state and federal governments. We need to level the playing field.

The fuel will be trialed on Rio Tinto’s RTM Tasman vessel on a mix of Transatlantic and Atlantic-Pacific routes, in one of the longest-duration marine biofuel trials to date. The results of the trial will help Rio Tinto study ways to reduce its carbon emissions from its marine fleet and inform its future biofuel strategy.
