The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has certified the entire family of heavy-duty diesel engines made by Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC), a Daimler Company—DD13, DD15, and DD16 engines with SCR technology— as being in compliance with the EPA 2010 emissions standard, which took effect at the start of this year.

India plans to introduce new fuel efficiency standards; the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards will give auto manufacturers time until 2015 to increase fuel economy from the current average of 14.1 The draft fuel efficiency standard based on CAFE will be notified in May, a Road Transport ministry official told HT.

US President Barack Obama announced fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emission standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Heavy-duty engines affected by the final standards are generally those that are installed in commercial medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses. The standards will phase in to the 2017 levels shown in Table 1.

Unlike its competitors in the heavy-duty on-road space, Navistar relied on advanced EGR technology for 2010 compliance instead of SCR. However, EPA 2010 regulations call for 0.20 EPA also had established an “averaging, banking and trading program” for engine credits as another way to meet emission standards besides payment of NCPs.
