Study Finds Black Carbon a Significant Factor in Melting of Himalayan Glaciers

Green Car Congress

A team of researchers from the US and India has found that airborne black carbon aerosols, or soot, from India is a major contributor to the decline in snow and ice cover on the glaciers in the Himalayan mountains. Black carbon alone contributes at least 30% of this sum. Change in annual linear snow cover from 1990 to 2001.

USGS/BOEM study identifies method to differentiate between natural seepage and produced oils in waters off Southern California

Green Car Congress

Resource managers now have a method to determine the source of oil found in the waters off Southern California and differentiate between naturally seeped oils and those produced by offshore oil and gas production. The state is also using this chemical protocol to determine the origin of oil on oiled wildlife.

New solid polymer electrolyte outperforms Nafion; novel polymer folding

Green Car Congress

Nafion has a complex multiscale phase-separated morphology with well-connected hydrophilic domains in which sulfonate-lined water channels percolate through a hydrophobic, semicrystalline polytetrafluoroethylene-like matrix. While the exact structure remains controversial, the water channels are thought to be nominally cylindrical.

ICCT study concludes no technical barriers to use of higher blends of ethanol

Green Car Congress

Studies have found slightly higher emissions of NO x and lower emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons in vehicles operating on E15 or E20 compared with those using E0. Phase separation of water and ethanol from gasoline. The risk of phase separation can be reduced by the addition of solubility improvers.

Researchers Propose Solar-Driven Biomass Gasification Pathway for Synthetic Fuel Production

Green Car Congress

Hydrogen for reverse water gas shift reaction to avoid producing CO 2 during the process is produced by electrolyzing water, driven by solar power. For comparison, they also modeled the production of methanol using only biomass as a fuel and also using coal as source of both carbon and energy. Hertwich and Zhang (2009).

Bloom Energy Debuts SOFC Fuel Cell System for Distributed Generation

Green Car Congress

Bloom’s customers have deployed the solution to lower and/or fix their energy costs, while significantly cutting their carbon footprints and enhancing their energy security by reducing their dependence on the grid. Founded in 2001, Bloom Energy can trace its roots to the NASA Mars space program.
