Researchers present new explanation for the long-range transport of PAH pollutants

Green Car Congress

When airborne particles (green) form before PAHs adhere, both the pollutants and particles dissipate quickly, as shown in the top row. But when the particles form in the presence of pollutants, which is what likely happens in nature, the longer-lasting particles enable the long-range transport of the pollutants (bottom).

Study findings suggest that switching from coal to natural gas would do little for global climate

Green Car Congress

While coal use causes warming through emission of heat-trapping carbon dioxide, it also releases comparatively large amounts of sulfates and other particles that, although detrimental to the environment, cool the planet by blocking incoming sunlight. Methane is an especially potent greenhouse gas. —Tom Wigley.

Toshiba’s SCiB Li-ion battery system Japan’s first recognized compliant with ClassNK guidline for marine vessels

Green Car Congress

At a time when pollution regulations are increasingly focused on the emissions ships generate, the SCiB will contribute to the protection of the marine and global environments. Preventing battery destruction or ignition due to thermal runway is of crucial importance in a ship’s confined space, with limited escape routes.

New study suggests reported PAH emissions in oil sands region greatly underestimated

Green Car Congress

Data describing emissions to air compiled from two official sources result in simulated concentrations in air, soil, water, and foliage that tend to fall close to or below the minimum measured concentrations of phenanthrene [PHE], pyrene [PYR], and benzo(a)pyrene [BaP] in the environment. Accounting for evaporative emissions (e.g.,
