The UW team is the first to try converting the entire young tree—leaves, bark and stems—into bio oil and ethanol using two separate processes. Research is underway to convert this bio-oil to a transportation fuel that resembles gasoline or diesel. This method is called “coppicing,” and the trees are known as poplar coppice.

Acetogens have several advantages to yeast: they convert all xylose (C 5 ) and glucose (C 6 ) sugars and tolerate all breakdown products of biomass; they operate in harsh environments; and they produce no CO 2 as a by-product. For the ethanol process, the acetic acid is then converted to an ester which is then hydrogenated to make ethanol.

Federal tax law doesn't let me get a rebate from the feds because the car isn't a fully qualified conversion; however, I applied to the State of Oregon to get the state rebate of $750. I hope Electro Auto doesn't get even more swamped by the publicity.
