Stena Line is seeking novel, cost-effective approaches to recover energy from exhaust gases from ship engines and to transform it into a more useful energy form (e.g., electricity to supply hotel loads on board the ship). These energy losses are primarily radiant heat loss and the sensible heat of exhaust gases.

Able to convert waste heat directly into electrical power, the E-PowerPack uses Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology to reduce ship fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. Where heat pumps use electrical power to create thermal energy for various purposes, an ORC system uses heat energy to generate electricity.

To date, exhaust gas has generally only been used if it was hundreds of degrees Celsius hot. For example, the gas turbines in natural gas power plants produce exhaust gas that is used to generate steam for the operation of a steam turbine. A lab demonstration model is currently under construction at CT.

Concept of the SOFC emissions control system. Their SOFC system can be operated without consuming the anode fuel (a reductant) at temperatures near that of the engine exhaust to eliminate the need for reductant refilling and extra heating. Therefore, an alternative SOFC operation at the exhaust temperature and open circuit is sought.

ElectraTherm, a leader in distributed, waste heat to power generation, is working with the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Creare, and the US Naval Academy (USNA) to demonstrate gas turbine waste heat recovery as part of a Small Business Innovation Research project. Hot water is the only fuel consumed by the Power+.
