DOE awarding $6.5M to 9 large-scale Phase I pilot coal projects

Green Car Congress

This FOA, issued in August 2017, is a $50-million funding opportunity for projects supporting cost-shared research and development to design, construct, and operate two large-scale pilots to demonstrate transformational coal technologies. Some of these technologies are now ready to proceed to the large-scale pilot stage of development.

EIA: US electricity generation from coal and natural gas both increased with summer heat

Green Car Congress

In August 2012, coal produced 39% of US electricity, up from a low of 32% in April 2012, when the natural gas share of generation equaled that of coal. The August coal share of generation is still notably lower than the 50% annual average over the 1990-2010 period. Data for 2011 and 2012 are preliminary.

SAF company DG Fuels closes investments with two Japanese companies

Green Car Congress

These facilities typically use approximately one ton of coal to produce one BBL of hydrocarbons, with a life cycle CO 2 emissions calculation that is slightly worse than equivalent fuels derived from conventional oil refining. DGF replaces the coal gasification used by others with biomass gasification and natural gas reforming.

Energy Vault to provide 1.6 GWh of gravity energy storage to support DG Fuels SAF projects

Green Car Congress

Energy Vault’s advanced gravity energy storage solutions are based on the proven physics and mechanical engineering fundamentals of pumped hydroelectric energy storage, but replace water with custom-made composite blocks, or “mobile masses”, which do not lose storage capacity over time.

SRI developing process for co-gasification of methane and coal to produce liquid transportation fuels; negligible water consumption, no CO2

Green Car Congress

Researchers from SRI International (SRI) are developing a methane-and-coal-to-liquids process that consumes negligible amounts of water and does not generate carbon dioxide. If biogas is substituted for conventional natural gas, total GHG emissions can further significantly reduced (190 gCO 2 /mile). Lifecycle GHG comparison.

Air France KLM signs 210M gallon SAF offtake agreement with DG Fuels

Green Car Congress

These changes eliminate the need for carbon sequestration and reduce the system’s feed-stock handling costs and complexity. The feed-stock reduction is achieved primarily by supplementing the process with oxygen and hydrogen produced by water electrolysis units that are powered by clean wind and solar generated electricity.

Lux Research: cost of electrofuels remains far from viable

Green Car Congress

Production costs per barrel of oil equivalent. The cost of electrofuels—fuels produced by catalyst-based systems for light capture, water electrolysis, and catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen to liquid fuels—remains far away from viable, according to a new analysis by Lux Research.
