Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Green Car Congress

The annual assessment of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the JRC and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) confirms that CO 2 emissions have stalled for the third year in a row. Global GHG emissions continue to be dominated by fossil carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, which however show a slowdown trend since 2012, and were stalled for the third year in a row in 2016. Also in Eurasia emissions grew in Turkey (5%) and Ukraine (8%).

New phase of globalization could undermine efforts to reduce CO2 emissions

Green Car Congress

A new study finds that the growth of carbon production from Chinese exports has slowed or reversed, reflecting a “new phase of globalization” between developing countries that could undermine international efforts to reduce emissions. The study, involving researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and colleagues in China and the United States, investigated how complex supply chains are distributing energy-intensive industries and their CO 2 emissions throughout the global South.

International study identifies 14 key measures to reduce methane and black carbon emissions; reduction in projected global mean warming of ~0.5 °C by 2050

Green Car Congress

A study by an international team of researchers, led by Drew Shindell of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, has identified 14 measures targeting methane and black carbon (BC) emissions that could reduce projected global mean warming ~0.5°C The team considered about 400 emission control measures to reduce these pollutants by using current technology and experience. All emissions control measures are assumed to improve air quality.

Most were visiting family in cities with consistently high levels of air pollution, including Ahmedabad and New Delhi, India; Rawalpindi, Pakistan; and Xian, China. Before embarking on their travels, all were taught how to measure their lung function and heart rate daily using commercially available spirometers (to measure lung function), wrist blood pressure monitors, and heart rate sensors. In general, high scorers exhibit long-standing commitments to protecting public health, preserving natural resources, and decoupling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from economic activity. Low scores on the EPI are indicative of the need for national sustainability efforts on a number of fronts, especially cleaning up air quality, protecting biodiversity, and reducing GHG emissions, said the researchers. Surge in natural gas vehicles predicted

Green Cars News

Currently, the top five markets for natural gas vehicles are Pakistan, Argentina, Iran, India and Brazil with Pike Research anticipating that India will be the fastest growing market at a rate of 18.4 This will be largely due to the availability of refuelling stations as well as the expansion of government emission rules in large Indian cities.

China has made initial progress, beginning to achieve air pollution declines; in contrast, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India have experienced the steepest increases in air pollution levels since 2010. HEI provides leadership for the air pollution portion of the GBD; HEI’s State of Global Air is the only report and website where all of the estimates of exposure to air pollution and their burden of disease included in the GBD air pollution analyses are made available for full public access.

Other factors, such as increased vehicle availability, a shortage of oil refining capabilities, tightening emissions restrictions, and increased energy security, are also fueling growth within specific countries. While China and Pakistan are the largest markets, Thailand and India are the fastest growing with compound annual growth rates of 18% and 12%, respectively, between 2013 and 2020. The aerosol buildup creates formations known as atmospheric brown clouds (ABCs) in which smog from diesel emissions, soot and other by-products of biomass burning accumulate and become widespread to a degree significant enough to affect regional climate. This underscores the importance of getting a handle on emissions in the region. Cyclone Phet in 2010 struck the coastlines of Pakistan and Oman and caused nearly $2 billion in damage. Emissions. Because of the lower carbon/hydrogen ratio of methane (CH 4 ) relative to gasoline, CO 2 emissions from the combustion of natural gas are approximately 75% of those of gasoline for a given amount of energy production. emissions are reduced by around 25% relative to the use of gasoline for the same engine efficiency. More than 70% of all NGVs and one-half of all fuelling stations can be found in just five countries: Pakistan, Iran, Argentina, Brazil and India.

Light-duty NGVs are not readily available in North America and parts of Asia, and are, in many cases, completely unavailable to private owners, the report notes. Conversely, in Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, Iran, and India—the top five markets for NGVs—there are a variety of light-duty NGVs available. Availability. IEA working paper highlights potential role of natural gas in reducing global road transport CO2

Green Car Congress

A new working paper published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) concludes that natural gas can play a significant role in cutting on-road vehicle carbon dioxide emissions, but that over the long term there will need to be a commitment to transition to very low CO 2. Natural gas may be especially important for cutting CO 2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) since other options such as electrification appear to be limited, the paper, written by Michiel Nijboer, notes.

Although Pakistan also has a large fleet of NGVs, its market has been volatile as the government looks to reduce strains on the country’s NG supplies, according to the report. This report identifies four main drivers for LD NGV adoption: economic benefits; environmental benefits; availability of fuel and vehicles; and energy security. NGVs offer lower emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG), particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxide (NO x ) than gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles.
